Birthdays are celebrated everywhere – even in space.

Washington DC native Astronaut Benjamin Alvin Drew, JR., a crew member on the final shuttle Discovery, received a special birthday gift from his sister, Karen Higginbotthem (sp?) on Nov 5. His sister heard an original birthday song “Happy Jazzy Birthday” on WPFW radio 89.3 fm’s Andrea Bray show on Saturdays from 4-7 pm.  Higginbotthem contacted the host Andrea Bray and asked how to get a copy of the birthday song so NASA could play the music in space on her brother’s birthday.

Host Andrea Bray says, “I get many, many calls from listeners each week, but I have never gotten a request for a birthday in outer space. This was a first,” she said. Singer –songwriter  Georgene Fountain got calls about the out of this world request and said “I thought it was a hoax!” Because the shuttle launch was delayed, Higginbotthem emailed the song to her brother on his birthday while the crew members was quarantined. “He really liked the song,” said Higginbotthem, adding that she would ask her brother Astronaut Drew to play the song in space after the flight is launched.

On Saturday November 13th, Higginbotthem will received an autographed copy of the CD from the radio show host Andrea Bray and from the singer / song-writer, Georgene Fountain.
