This September 29, go the extra mile with the Washington Humane Society (WHS) and be a part of the DC Walk for the Animals & Pet-A-Palooza. Join us in celebrating our community’s animals and walking to end pet homelessness in DC.

Prince George's Co. Police Officers Are "Running the Beat"

Officers from the Prince George's County Police Department are going for a run on Wednesday, July 18 in Hillcrest Heights/Marlow Heights in an event called "Running the Beat." Officers have been running through focus areas since April in support of  the county-wide Transforming Neigborhoods Initiative.

The goal is to engage the community and be a visible presence in the following focus neighborhoods: Langley Park, East Riverdale/Bladensburg, Suitland/Coral Hills, Kentland/Palmer Park, Hillcrest Heights/Marlow Heights and Glassmanor/Oxon Hill.

Fireworks Light Up The Sky In Poolesville

Fireworks will sparkle in Poolesville on Wednesday, July 4th beginning at 6:00 p.m., near the soccer fields at the corner of Hughes Road & Sugarland Road.

Those who stop by can enjoy live music by the Jim Bowie Band, hot dogs, hamburgers, BBQ, funnel cakes, kettle corn, Ben & Jerry's ice cream, Kona Ice, Popsicles, and more.

Parking is $5 per car, and handicap parking is available so come early for best parking.

 Pets, coolers, and alcohol are not allowed.
 

Montgomery County Police Reminder:  It is illegal for private citizens to possess, sell or discharge fireworks in Montgomery County.

Directions from Rockville/Gaithersburg/Potomac areas: North on Rt. 28 ( Darnestown Rd.), across from Harris Teeter turn West on Rt. 112 (Seneca Rd), continue West onto River Rd, Turn North on Hughes Rd to the event at the corner of Hughes Rd & Sugarland Rd.

Woodrow Wilson "Woody" Guthrie, is an iconic American singer-songwriter and folk musician whose musical legacy includes hundreds of political, chiltraditional and children's songs, ballads and improvised works.

SILVER SPRING, Md.  – Most Montgomery Parks and facilities will operate its usual hours on Wednesday, July 4th. But before you plan your outing, check out what parks will be closed or operate on shortened schedules on Independence Day.

The following facilities and programs will be closed on July 4:

  • Montgomery Parks Nature Centers:
  • Locust Grove Nature Center
  • Meadowside Nature Center
  • Brookside Nature Center
  • Montgomery Parks Summer Camps
  • Park Permits Office
  • Pauline Betz Addie Tennis Center at Cabin John Regional Park
  • Wheaton Ice Arena at Wheaton Regional Park

The following facilities will close early on July 4th:

  • Cabin John Ice Rink at Cabin John Regional Park: Open 6 a.m. – 4 p.m.
  • Olney Skate Park at Olney Manor Recreational Park: Open 10 a.m. – 6 p.m.
  • South Germantown Driving Range at South Germantown Recreational Park: Open 9 a.m.

FOTODC Looks For The Best Area Photographer

Calling all photographers. FotoDC is on the hunt for the most interesting work by Washington area photographers for the 2nd annual Uncover/Discover exhibition.

The panel of curators includes Elizabeth Krist, Senior Photo Editor at National Geographic; Jayme McLellan, Director of Civilian Art Projects and Ken Ashton, Artist and Museum Professional.

Curators will select work from emerging and established photographers who sent in their stuff for a chance to be featured in two exhibitions this fall. 

"It is our mission to discover and spotlight the work of Metro Area photographers,” said Theo Adamstein, Executive Director and Founder of FotoDC.

Local Gym Participates in World's Largest Swim Lesson

Over 24 countries and 46 states within the U.S. will be participating in the Guinness World Record of the World’s Largest Swim Lesson this week.

Want to join in all the fun? On Thursday, June 14, the Sport & Health Clubs in Gaithersburg, McLean and Brambleton, Va., will be hosting open swim lessons at 11 a.m., and anyone can attend.

This swim lesson is intended to prevent future accidents, practice water safety, and reinforce the fact that swimming lessons save lives.
